Director

Tomas Baiza, AAETomas Baiza

Duties: Direct overall AAE operations and coordinate AAE’s collaboration with other BSU advising and enrollment units.

Tomas joined AAE in 2013 with professional experience in admissions, human resources, and residential learning development.  His teaching experience includes courses in history, career exploration, and graduate research methodology.  Tomas received his Bachelor of Arts at San Jose State University, holds two Masters degrees from Indiana University and the University of Michigan, and earned his doctorate in Education from the University of Oregon.

Duties: Oversees Academic Enhancement services including tutoring and academic success workshops and courses.
Jillana has served as the Associate Director since July 2013, and prior to that worked in the Boise State Service-Learning Program. She has a passion for utilizing peers, active learning, and research based study strategies to help students reach their academic potential. Jillana is a proud graduate of Boise State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Policy.

Duties:  Administrative support for AAE staff, Learning Assistant and Tutoring programs, front desk support and operations management, customer service, data collection, purchasing, budget management, travel/expense.

Veronica  came to AAE in February 2016 after working in the Intensive English Program at Boise State.  She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from California State Polytechnic University and has a Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management.  Veronica has traveled extensively through Europe, Latin America and Asia.  She also has an affinity for dogs and owns and manages her own dog walking and pet sitting company.

Advising Systems Coordinator

Duties:  Manage implementation of university-wide student success initiatives, advising process documentation and standardization, University Advising Network Financial management, data acquisition and dissemination.

Tim started at AAE in 2002  (before we were AAE!) as a student employee and has advanced to his current position.  He is a proud Boise State alum having earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Science – Health Information Management in 2010.

Duties: Collaborate with colleges and departments to improve advising processes and increase student success: areas of focus include College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, Extended Studies, University Housing, as well as UNIV courses.

Karina comes to Boise State with experience in higher education and student affairs. She is currently pursuing her PhD in International Education from Northcentral University. She received her Master of Science in Communication from Portland State University and her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Alaska, Anchorage.

Duties: Provide academic advising to students who are exploring new majors and coordinate programing and events to aid with student program selection.

Paula comes to Boise State with 17 years of higher education experience in the areas of career counseling and academic advising. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from University of Arizona and her Master of Counseling degree from Idaho State University.

Tiara joined the AAE staff in May 2015 as a professional advisor after working for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.  She was a peer advisor in AAE for 2 years prior to graduation. Tiara earned a dual degree in Theatre Arts and English Literature from Boise State University and was selected as the 2013 commencement speaker.

Alizabeth joins AAE with a Master of Science in Counseling and Student Affairs from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Alizabeth is excited about her role, as she holds sincere passion for fostering students’ skills in not only academic but holistic success. Additionally, Alizabeth enjoys movies, spending time with family and friends and dancing!

Liz is originally from Northern California, and earned her master’s degree at Indiana State University in May of 2014. She had been working at Boise State for a little over a year in Residential Life, and is excited to be a part of the AAE family. Liz enjoys exploring Idaho and sampling all of the local cuisine.

Banks joins AAE by way of Oregon State University, where he advised students in the College of Forestry. His background is in undergraduate advising, as well as student-Veteran advocacy and outreach. Banks is a proud Army Veteran and holds an MS in Academic Advising from Kansas State University. Away from work he enjoys cycling, hiking, and spending time with family.  In addition to first year activities, Banks will focus on transfer student advising and liaison work with Veterans Services.

Megan moved to Idaho in September 2015 from her hometown in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Go Pack Go!  She received her Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where she advised undeclared students. She is loving getting to know Boise State University, connecting with its students, and exploring all that Boise has to offer!

Duties: Coordinates the training, supervision, and assessment of Academic Enhancement’s tutorial services programs including the Learning Assistant program and drop-in tutoring services across campus.

Matt joined AAE in an interim position in October 2012 as a graduate student and adjunct faculty member in the Biology Department at Boise State. Matt graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Ecology from Boise State University in 2009 and a master’s in Biology  in 2015.

Duties: Kate Steven (pronouns: they/them/their) joined the AAE team in 2016 to provide support to the Learning Assistant program and the students they serve. Kate holds an Master of Education in College Student Personnel from Ohio University, and has been at Boise State since 2013, serving three years as Program Coordinator in the Gender Equity Center (previously named the Women’s Center).

In academic success, Kate has excelled at coaching college students through academic and career path challenges by providing a supportive environment for each person to find the best solution that fits. Kate is committed to social justice and helping others navigate intersectional identities, as well as understanding how identity impacts the pursuit of higher education. Kate has particular interests in media literacy, gender performance and queerness in general.

In their spare time, Kate teaches and performs circus art including aerial fitness, pole art, and flying trapeze.
